Land O’ Lakes Schools Made The Grade

“When the Florida Department of Education handed out report cards for schools today, Land O’ Lakes area campuses made the grade. Every school in the area ranked an A. Some schools, such as Imagine charter school, even earned extra honors.

Imagine received the coveted Adequate Yearly Progress designation from the federal government. Earning this designation is no easy task, said Summer Romagnoli, Pasco schools spokeswoman.

“AYP is the federal measure – there are various subgroups of students (based upon socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, special needs, language, etc.),” she said. “If each subgroup does not make what the federal government determines to be sufficient progress (it is usually a target proficiency rate), then the school does not make AYP.  It is extremely difficult and rare for schools to make AYP because the standard is so high and just one subgroup failing to meet the target means that a school doesn’t make it.”

Only three other elementary schools received the AYP designation.

Kathy Helean, principal at the Imagine charter school in Land O’ Lakes, was very pleased with the results.

“All of my teachers were truly focused on every child being successful,” she said. “We put some remedial classes and interventions in place. Our focus was in math because that’s where we dropped last year.”

Imagine has been open for three years. The first year it rated a B and then dropped to a C.

Here’s how Land O’ Lakes area schools did on their report cards:

Elementary

  • Connerton – A with a 92 percent score
  • Denham Oaks – A with an 85 percent score
  • Lake Myrtle – A with a 92 percent score
  • Oakstead – A with a 97 percent score
  • Pine View – A with a 92 percent score
  • Imagine – A with a 100 percent score
  • Odessa – A with an 87 percent score

Middle

  • Charles Rushe – A with a 79 percent score
  • Pine View – A with an 82 percent score
